Truphone Raises $32.5 Million More in Funding
I awoke today to see some great news from the folks at Truphone. According to the email I received from Andy Abramson, Truphone has announced another rounding of funding, this time in the amount of $32.5 million. While it is great to see investment in this space, the most intriguing part of the announcement was what they plan to do with the money. What got me was that what they intend to do with the money is exactly where I had saw them going with their business as I lamented in a post earlier last week.
- It could mark the emergence of a new kind of cellular provider, one that offers global coverage at local calling rates.
It is number three that is the real game changer for Truphone. To date, cellular providers have been limited by geography. The convergence of Truphone’s technology and that of SIM4travel has the legs to carry Truphone towards a new business model. Imagine a worldwide GSM provider. One who also offers service via WiFi networks and quite possible fixed IP lines at one flat rate, no matter where you are calling from or to. Interesting, huh?
Compare this, with what was written in their release this morning:
With the additional funding available from the new round, Truphone plans to deliver on its vision of providing a killer combination of mobile cost and mobile convenience: a single, global SIM card that offers not only low call charges both domestically and abroad, but also internet calls at free and ultra-low prices.
Almost dead on…and I haven’t been covering this space that long.
In any event, congrats to the hardworking team at Truphone on this round of funding.
