Mobile VoIP’s Static Number Dilemma

A simple phone number.

Everyone’s has one; some of us have more then one.

But for most consumers, their phone number is attached to their phone; one number, one device. Those of us in the IP telephony space know that “one number, one device” is not mutually exclusive when it comes to voice. With IP, one can have a single number on a multitude of devices. The idea that a number is virtual is not lost upon us, but with most consumers it certainly is. And thus we have Mobile VoIP static number dilemma.

While many Mobile VoIP services do offer their customer a true number, many services, including fan favorite Truphone, do not offer a static number. We get it, you don’t need it. But consumers have been conditioned to equate a phone number to a device. When they start a phone service, they get a phone number assigned to their phone. Not getting a phone number when starting a service that is assigned to a phone (or even assigned to your account) could be a very real hurdle to the technologies mass adoption. Heck, just imagine what is going to happen the first time someone cancels a Mobile VoIP service thinking that they also/actually canceled their cellular service.

Nit picky? Maybe. Minor? You be the judge.
