Mobile VoIP to Increase In Popularity
Fueled by increasing demand from consumers looking to save money on their cellular calls, dual mode phones (VoWifi/GSM) will increase in popularity over the coming years. According to Colin Duffy, council member for the Internet Service Providers’ Association (ITSPA), technology that could enable widespread adoption of mobile VoIP services is still in the developmental stages. This is of course already widely known, but it always good to hear more folks talk about the potential of mobile VoIP.
“What I think will be the proper solution to proper mobile VoIP is a dual phone - an old-fashioned cell phone that is also a VoIP phone simultaneously, so that when it picks up a Wi-Fi signal it uses that instead of the mobile [network].”
The jury is still out on dual mode phones. They are plagued by software bugs and battery life issues and no major carrier has yet to deploy them on a wide scale. I think they are still 18 months away from being ready for prime time use.
